Members are hereby given notice that the Society’s AGM will be held on Wednesday, March 19th at 7.30pm in the Northbrook Hall, Micheldever
We are delighted to be joined by guest speaker Peter Clarke, author of Dever & Down: A History of the Villages in and Around the Dever Valley, who will give an illustrated talk entitled “Ecclesiastical Treasures of the Dever Valley”.
The valley of the River Dever is enriched by a wonderful collection of ecclesiastical treasures which bear witness to the historical and cultural heritage of the area. Strung along the banks of the river are a number of churches, all of which have been listed by English Heritage. Most have their origins in medieval times and some can be traced as far back as the Saxon era. Today, these churches are a precious element of the landscape, which contributes to the distinctive character of the Dever Valley.
Peter Clarke, a former warden of one of these churches, will take us on a tour of these gems. He will describe their history, disasters that have befallen them, unique features of their settings, and interesting details of their architecture and furnishings. He will also reveal their connections with prominent people including William Morris, Lord Byron, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and Sir Francis Baring.
Before Peter’s talk the formal business of the AGM will include reviewing the Society’s accounts, the Chairman’s Statement, and electing or re-electing the Committee.
Refreshments will follow. Free to attend; all are welcome.
